Nendoroid Minato Namikaze – Sorry! Something Went Wrong!

Naruto: 5 Shinobi Minato Could Beat (& 5 He'd Lose To) Minato was Naruto”s father, the Fourth Hokage, & a great ninja overall. Naturally, he”d have close battles against some of the toughest shinobi.

Also known as the Fourth Hokage, Minato was one of the fastest (and most talented) shinobi in Naruto history. In addition to the raw speed at his disposal, he was able to teleport between the tags he had placed, allowing for a dizzying number of creative solutions against seemingly impossible foes.

However, as legendary his speed might be, there are a handful of individuals whose power eclipses even the Yellow Flash”s own. By analyzing how he would fare against the anime”s many characters, we can better understand the strengths and weaknesses of Naruto”s father.

The First Hokage and God of Shinobi, Hashirama”s prowess eclipses Minato”s in several regards. Not only is his jutsu greater (capable of erecting a massive wooden golem that crushed Madara”s Susanoo), but he also possesses excellent resilience through the cells coursing through his body.

Further, he has been demonstrated to be a superior fighter, resisting Madara longer than the Fourth Hokage. The latter”s shortcoming is evinced through his confrontation against him in the Fourth War, failing to connect his Rasengan against the villain and having his arm ripped off in the process.

Under ordinary circumstances, the water dome Kisame is able to summon would provide a staggering obstacle. It leaves its target vulnerable to his waiting jaws and chakra draining attacks.

However, should Minato have left a tag anywhere outside its radius, he could teleport to it and effectively render the Akatsuki”s best jutsu obsolete. His sword would not be any more useful – while it is able to drain the energy of those it connects with, the Fourth Hokage”s unmatched speed evinces that he would only need to dodge the villain, rather than parrying him outright.

Sasuke
Minato would struggle significantly against Sasuke on account of how the man”s abilities counter his own. Though he may be fast (and intelligent enough) to strike through a Kamui (demonstrated in his battle against Obito), the rogue Uchiha”s defenses provide an entirely new challenge.

He is able to strike from the safety of his Susanoo, grinding down his opponents while remaining impervious to harm. Only an immense retaliatory force (such as Naruto and Kurama) is sufficient in shattering this barrier – since Minato”s strongest weapon is the Rasengan, he lacks the caliber necessary to create an opening by which he can plant a tag.

Itachi Uchiha Akatsuki
Itachi is arguably the single strongest genjutsu user in the entire anime, and as a result, he is extremely difficult to resist. Not even Kakashi Hatake – a skilled Jonin – was able to endure it, succumbing to its maddening and excruciating effects.

However, since Minato has absorbed half of the power and chakra of Kurama (in order to keep Naruto safe), it stands to reason he has many of the natural defenses against illusions that are inherent to a Jinchuriki. As a result, Itachi would be deprived of his primary weapon and could not hope to match Minato”s speed in a straightforward fight.

In his base form, Might Guy would likely falter against the Fourth Hokage. Despite his sound reflexes and impressive physical strength, Minato has overcome taijutsu-dependent targets as proven through his battle against the Fourth Raikage and Killer Bee.

Should Guy open the eighth gate, however, Minato would be vastly outclassed even if he had an opportunity to litter the area with tags. Swift enough to kick through space itself, the taijutsu legend would ascend to heights beyond the Fourth Hokage”s ability – for the limited time he could reach them.

5 COULD BEAT: Pain Whose Powerful Attacks Could Be Countered

Pain was among Naruto”s most deadly adversaries on account of his numerous skills. The Almighty Push was an ability devastating enough to destroy most of Konoha in a single blast.

However, Minato is capable of obviating such tremendous attacks, as proven through his teleportation of Kurama”s Tailed Beast Bomb (an ability that wreaked similar havoc). Should he use such a talent against Nagato, he would deplete him of much of his strength, rendering the Akatsuki leader a manageable threat to defeat.

Madara was one of the few shinobi with reflexes faster than Minato”s. It was seen through their brief exchange during the Fourth Shinobi War, where he was not only able to defend from the Fourth Hokage”s Rasengan but also turn it against his other enemies.

In his sustained sage mode state, he becomes much more resistant to ninjutsu and genjutsu, also able to heal his body from what grievous injuries were dealt. As a result, even if Minato is able to land dozens of successful attacks, few would produce meaningful consequences against one of the most deadly villains in existence.

3 COULD BEAT: Orochimaru With His Inadequate Reflexes

Orochimaru has much more versatility than Minato. He can disperse his body into snakes, paralyze his opponents, distort his limbs, and even summon the gigantic Manda in order to fight his enemies.

However, his inadequate reflexes would render him an easy target for the Fourth Hokage to overcome. He was barely able to keep up with Hiruzen despite his age and instead relied on his Edo Tensei thralls. Further, he is particularly vulnerable to overwhelming ninjutsu such as Sasuke”s Chidori, entailing that Minato”s Rasengan would find similar success against him.

Even if Minato is able to retain the power of Kurama for his fight against Naruto, the intrepid Hokage has many advantages by which to overcome his father. Though both men know how to use sage mode, Naruto is able to harness it much more efficiently, shattering the Susanoo with a concentrated blast.

Further, he possesses durability to survive having much of his body impaled by Pain and fought against Madara in a prolonged battle (unlike Minato, who was defeated almost instantly). This entails a staggering differential in martial prowess between the Fourth Hokage and his unspeakably talented son.

1 COULD BEAT: Tobirama Who Can”t Match Minato”s Pace

Tobirama was a natural genius at developing and using jutsu, such as the famed shadow clone and even the Edo Tensei. Ironically, however, much of the skills that he has created were employed more seamlessly by other shinobi, such as Naruto or Kabuto respectively.

As deadly as Tobirama”s water-based melee attacks might be, he has never displayed reflexes keen enough to insinuate he could match the pace of the Yellow Flash. This would allow Minato to land a Rasengan against him, one which could obliterate him instantly.
